Many rules in poker games have been introduced to ensure fair play among the gamblers and all casino houses approve and follow these rules. One such rule is the one player to a hand regulation whereby all resolution regarding the game in any given hand of play needs to be taken by a single player without anybody’s help. This binds the player from asking for pointers from any of his opponent or even from any spectator while all viewers are emphatically forbade from advising the players. This rule checks the players’ tendency to wonder aloud and remark what kind of hands his opponents may possibly have. While this can be considered as a minor breach of rule, to read honestly revealed cards during showdown is not seen as a violation.

An essential poker concept that comes into play often in games of high/low split variation is card speak where declaration of intent from the players don’t take place and during showdown, the players one by one reveal their cards and win or lose the hands accordingly. Another meaning of card speak becomes significant in casino houses when the players making a verbal announcement regarding the strength of their hand is not compulsory. So if a player makes a mistaken declaration and his hands show that he has a different strength than what he had claimed, then according to the cards speak rule the player’s hand will be determined by his cards and not by his claim. This rule also holds true when a player makes a deliberate miscalling about his hand strength and whether any action be taken against him lies with the discretion of the casino house. It is also important to observe that this rule in no way can determine how a pot is to be awarded or have any say regarding responsibilities of the poker players.

Hand-for-hand which is a favored playing mode in poker tournaments is not introduced from the start. This concept comes into effect when the next player to be eliminated turns out to be the last ranked player entitled to get a share of payout. However, most poker tournaments use the system of group payouts to simplify the process since instead of just one player several players can get eliminated at the same time. So, for example, 20th to 18th ranked players get the same payout amount whereas the 17th to 14th ranked players get comparably higher payout. In this case hand-for-hand play will be introduced in play when there are respectively 21 and 18 players in the fray.

Use of hand-for-hand play eliminates probability of ties in play except in one rare situation. If several players go all-in while a hand-for-hand play is in progress and all such players get busted, ranking is assigned to the players based on the number of chips they had in stack before the hand of play began. If now two players have the same chip count, then a tie in player ranking is allowed which would result in equal splitting of prize money between the two players. In case it is not possible to do chip count, then all the eliminated players are accorded the same rank and are considered as tied. Interestingly in the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event, the casino house ruled that the two players who had tied need not split the payout and were individually given the payout meant for a singly ranked player.

In the 2006 World Series of Poker, instead of hand-for-hand, round-for-round play was introduced where round signified blinds being paid in he game tables. So instead of hands, tables simultaneously play in rounds and waits till all can start the next round of play together. The advantage of round-for-round over hand-for-hand play is that while both cancel out chance of stalling play, the former is easy to coordinate even when several game tables are active without compromising game speed.

An interesting situation that happens during poker tournament games is the hand-for-hand condition of play which comes into effect when multiple game tables are in progress and the tournament is witnessing a build-up of prize money as payouts and the players are assigned a ranking.

In all tournaments, the poker players get their ranks based on the exact order in which other players are eliminated. Ranking is important as payout depends on it and this slows down playing of hands. The concept of hand-for-hand states that all hands of play in the tournament, irrespective of which game table any player is present, must be done simultaneously. So, if in one table a hand of play is over, the dealer must wait till all the game tables have their hands of play complete. However, hand-for-hand does not have any effect on the fortune of the games in individual tables, it only stipulates tat dealing of cards must be at the same time.

There is another significant reason why hand-for-hand play is the preferred mode of play in tournament games. Sometimes player may deliberately make the course of a particular hand of play slow so that while play in other tables continues and participants get eliminated, they themselves get a better ranking and have a higher chance of winning sizeable amount of the payout. Although sometimes, a player may genuinely need more time to play his hand, even then the effect will be the same giving him an unfair advantage. To prevent this situation from arising, hand-for-hand play mode has no alternative and thus universally followed by the various poker tournaments. This also ensures that all the game tables which are active in the tournament involves the same number of hands of play and that no player can stall the game to gain any benefit.

The concept of flop in poker games comes into play in community card poker variants like Texas hold ‘em and Omaha hold ‘em and mean either the round of play where three cards with their faces up are dealt to the board or it is a reference to the cards themselves. The dealing of the flop cards closes the opening betting round and is followed by the second round of betting. Two more betting rounds each of which sees a dealing of a card follow the flop round — the fourth card or turn and the fifth and final card or river. Sometimes the flop cards are dealt in a stack with their faces down and all three are simultaneously turned up so that no player can in any manner see any particular card out of turn and make change in his personal game tactics. Since at the end of flop round, a player knows five of the seven possible cards he can choose from which to make his 5-card hand, the round is significant in terms of the players making crucial decisions in the subsequent betting rounds by the information they have.

An important concept in online poker games is hand history whereby poker game sites keep a record of action by players to supervise their gameplay pattern and to resolve in case of disputes. Some online poker sites allow players to avail their hand history to aid in tracking personal playing style and act as a database of previous plays to aid in future critical play situations.

Generally a hand history records the variant of the game, its limit type, names of all players with their position at table, size of player stack at start of play, betting action engaged into by all players in each round, the face up cards. Hand history of game sites record hole cards of all players but when making available to individuals, only their personal hole cards are shown unless another player showed his hole card at showdown or by choice.

Declaration in a poker game which is played as high/low split is followed by showdown whereby the player who declared he would play high and happens to be with the highest hand wins the top half of the pot with the bottom half going to him who declared to play low and holds the lowest [...]

Declaration in a poker game which is played as high/low split is followed by showdown whereby the player who declared he would play high and happens to be with the highest hand wins the top half of the pot with the bottom half going to him who declared to play low and holds the lowest cards. If none of the players declared for playing in either high or low, then the winner of one half of the pot also gets the other half. So, if no player declared to play for high, then the one who had the lowest hand also wins the entire pot.

For players who declare to swing, that is play for both high and low hands, qualifying hands are must to compete for the pot. One among several rules of gameplay for this situation says a player intending to swing must either win or tie both high and low to get his pot share. If ties are acceptable then he who has the highest hand but a tie in the low, wins three quarters of the pot and the rest is won by the other tied player. If gameplay forbids ties, then the player who swings must emerge as a single winner on both sides and even getting a tie on one side and winning the other does not give him any pot. This is a very common poker rule but it robs the game of its thrill as players do not risk a swing declaration. This has led to adaptation of rules where ties are accepted.

If a swing player fails to win one of the two hands, then the player with second best hand is awarded even that half of the pot which the swing player won. This rule is popular among players as it makes declaration a very tactical affair. So if a swing player wins the high and loses or ends up with a tie in the low, in a game that don’t allows ties, then the player with the best low hand would win the entire pot.
